Cycle and Footbridge

Classe (Ravenna), 2004

Design: 2000

Execution: 2001-2004

Together with the bicycle lane and an underpass linking the existing road network, it constitutes the connection between the town and the basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe.

Its architecture is intentionally characterised by simplicity. The support structures for the iron part, necessary in order to reduce the crossing span without having recourse to a cable-stayed bridge, are in exposed concrete. They are configured as two thin “plates” of constant section both longitudinally and transversally, set at an acute angle. They are absolutely rigid, without hollows or depressions. The iron part is laid on them, which is nothing more than a Bailey bridge but more refined in the attention to detail.

In this main structure which, as we said, is geometrically linear, the traffic surface of the footbridge proper is interlocked in a soft and slightly arched manner. A sort of ogee arch, necessary for structural reasons and rendered even more evident by the parapet at a constant height along its whole length. We aimed at making the various components plain in an architectonic way. Rigid and linear for the strictly structural ones, gentle and flexible for the actual footbridge.
